STOP PRESS
Steventon is now not just famous for its Jane Austin heritage, it now is the home to the only accredited Montessori nursery school in North Hampshire. We had our final accreditation visit at the end of June and our assessor was greatly impressed by our happy settled children, our beautiful calm environment, and the quality of the teachers. She loved our outdoor area where she observed children getting quite wet as they washed clothes, furniture, watered plants and painted the walls. Our assessor is one of the most highly respected Montessorians in the country so it is high praise indeed. 'Montessori Education UK' our accreditation body sets the highest standards in the Montessori world. This is the highest accolade a Montessori school can achieve so we are all really pleased.
All of this came in the middle of our busy summer term, the children have been taking part in ‘Mother Goose’, playing violins and listening to our inspirational musical visitors. They have been growing sunflowers and painting like Van Gough, finding out about the properties of water and doing musical water cycles. They have been having new baby brothers and sisters and running a baby week, taking part in Montessori Olympics and also having a sports day. Then there is all the housework – flowers to arrange, shelves to dust, tables to wash, floors to mop, snack to prepare. With at least 2 fully Montessori qualified staff in each day for every 10 children, we have a chance to observe, respond to each child’s individual needs and learn from the child.
Recent Event:
100 steps for Montessori – fundraising for Leukaemia Research.
It is 100 years since the first ‘children’s house’ opened in the slums of Rome. The Montessori world has been celebrating this milestone in a variety of ways including the 100 steps. Children in Montessori ‘children’s houses’ across the globe walked 100 steps raising money for charity as well as celebrating the global nature of Montessori and raising awareness of the movement.
The children at Steventon Children’s house made a huge globe, and printed feet across the middle. Pictures of children throughout the world taken within the last 100 years were discussed as children recognised familiar activities and materials as in the pictures.

The children walked the 100 steps around a track. Along the way they stopped to do an activity such as carrying water from one bucket to another or pegging out the washing. The children raised nearly £500 for Leukaemia Research, an amazing achievement for such a small school. This charity was chosen as our postman’s son has been seriously ill with this sickness. The children missed our daily visitor as he took time off to nurse his son.
