Each of the 5 areas of learning has its own place within the classroom.
Practical Life Exercises
These are usually the first activities children undertake as they act as a bridge with home. They include everyday activities like pouring, sweeping and dressing as well as learning social skills. The activities foster independence and concentration as well as developing skills needed for literacy and mathematics later.

Sensorial Materials
These materials are specifically designed to refine the senses and grade any differences. Each of the materials isolates one quality such as colour, size, shape, texture, weight, sound or smell. Whilst working with these attractive materials the child is also being indirectly introduced to the other areas of learning.

Literacy
We provide a phonetic approach to literacy with phonetic games to prepare the child, before progressing through the language materials. A rich language environment is provided with stories, songs, rhymes and discussion. The materials utilise the senses to help develop understanding and letter recall. A wide range of books is located in the comfortable book corner.

Mathematics
As children learn through concrete experiences, the mathematics materials are specifically designed to be handled and looked at to aid understanding. Children gain a physical impression of size and quantity as well as seeing and visualising the patterns and structures of mathematics.

Cultural subjects
This area includes biology, history, geography and science. Montessori herself placed a great deal of emphasis on these subjects. She believed that children should be helped to appreciate both the natural and man-made environment in order to understand man’s place within the world. The activities and materials at Steventon Children’s House aim to do this in conjunction with outdoor activities and nature walks.

Other Activities
Children are able to express themselves freely each day through opportunities to experiment with exciting materials. This may include painting, junk modelling, singing, dancing or playing instruments.

Cooking
Children cook a wide range of simple foods, some from different parts of the world. Children enjoy the whole process from selecting ingredients, weighing, mixing and baking.

French
On Tuesday afternoons Nathalie from ‘bleu blanc rouge’ joins the children for a French session.

Sport On Thursday afternoons Planet Sports join us for a fun sports session
