This is a child centred approach in which children are given the freedom to learn at their own pace within an environment specifically designed for them.
Through observation and an understanding and respect of how children learn, each child’s current needs are recognised and the environment and activities altered accordingly.

Children learn through ‘hands on’ experiences and investigation, developing understanding with the help of materials. This gives them confidence and the motivation to learn.
Self discipline and good behaviour are encouraged through: providing appropriate self chosen activities, positive role models from adults and children, encouraging consideration for the needs of others and reinforcement of positive behaviour.
Having children of mixed ages within the school enables the younger ones to learn from watching the older children and the older children benefit from helping the younger ones. This is an important part of social development as well as aiding intellectual and emotional development.
